State Bird: Willow Goldfinch
Despite winning over the hearts of school children in 1932 (they voted it their favorite bird) and passing a vote in one house of the legislature in 1941, the goldfinch remained an unofficial symbol. In 1951, however, the Willow Goldfinch was declared the official bird of the state of Washington.
